Something I’d Bring If I Were Shipwrecked On An Island – No. 7: MP3 Player

Remember MP3 players?

The small ones that could hold thousands of songs. It was revolutionary. I didn't have an Apple iPod, but I did have a random MP3 player. Digital storage, all your files, and you just need earphones. Your playlists, all your songs, and so many of them you can listen to for hours and then again and again and again. It wasn't truly unlimited. It just had the songs you selected. So it wasn't endless choice and everything you could ever listen to, with the smartphone and the internet. But it was still the soundtrack of your life.

I could use one of those when I'm shipwrecked on a deserted island.

There are all the other things I would pick on my list of things to bring, of course, the survival gear and something that would help me get back to civilization because I wouldn't want to die there. But then, once we get past those and start talking minimalist essentials that bring you so much life, I would love an MP3 player which wouldn't run out of battery and all these songs I've loved and some new artists that I think I'll like but haven't listened to their entire albums yet.

I would have those earphones in, lie down in the sand, in the sun, and gaze at the clouds floating by, and listen to music.
